Fifteen-Year-Old Malala Yousafzai has been named by TIME Magazine as a runner-up for its annual “Person of the Year” 2012, a highly anticipated look at “the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year.”

Malala made headlines around the world when she was targeted and shot by the the Taliban for her efforts to let girls receive an education in her native Pakistan. As TIME notes: “They wanted to silence her. Instead, they amplified her voice.”
